Bemis was the ace of the only Puget Sound program to win an NCAA D-I conference title. Gregg Bemis '75 entered the Hall of Fame ranked in the top seven in six statistical pitching categories – including top three all-time for career wins and strikeouts. Coach John Heinrick once said Bauman was "one of three best all-around linemen I've coached." He was recipient of the Amos Alonzo Stagg Award for sportsmanship, leadership and work ethic. While at UPS Ralph Bauman, a four-year football letterwinner, was a first-team All-American football guard, Little All-Coast and All-Evergreen Conference offensive/defecsive guard. Later Bates became Director of Athletics at Washington State, Commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference, and a top NCAA executive. He was invited to the Olympic Trials in 1932. Leading scorer on the basketball team and conference champion in track in the low hurdles.
